Der Bericht zeigt, wie sie sich auf den Aufenthalt vorbereitet hat, was sie im Studium und Alltag in Deutschland erlebt hat und wie der Austausch mit Studierenden aus aller Welt sie geprägt hat. Field Report: Incoming Exchange Student (ERASMUS+ & BW Scholarship)

During my studies in Tbilisi, I was encouraged to join exchange programs, but I hesitated due to concerns about scholarships being complicated and costly. My perspective changed when the International Office of the Catholic University of Freiburg visited my university. Meeting professors and students from Germany sparked my interest, and I applied for the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship. I spent a memorable semester at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Freiburg im Breisgau, filled with adventure, joy, and personal growth.

Preparation and Support

The preparation process began with an online meeting with a representative from the International Office at the Catholic University of Freiburg. They provided helpful tips on the city, the university, and daily life in Germany. A former Baden-Württemberg scholarship student also shared useful advice, like how to get to Freiburg, activities to attend, and tips on adapting to the new environment. This support made my transition much easier.

Campus and Learning Environment

The campus at the Catholic University of Freiburg was well-equipped with great resources. My accommodation was comfortable, conveniently located, and designed for student life. The housing application process went smoothly, thanks to the support of the International Office team.
Studying in Freiburg was a valuable experience. The assessment system, which focused on research papers, suited my learning style well. Writing papers allowed me to dive deeper into subjects and apply the knowledge I gained.
Student-professor relationships were remarkably positive. Professors fostered a supportive, approachable environment that encouraged open communication, dialogue, and feedback. This sense of equality helped me feel motivated and comfortable.

Cultural Experiences and Personal Growth

One of the highlights of my exchange was the strong bond I formed with fellow international students. We shared meals, traveled together, and learned about each other's cultures. A memorable moment was when a student from Vietnam brought oranges for everyone, and it was fascinating to see the different ways people cut them, highlighting the diversity of perspectives.
Another cultural experience was when two students from Georgia and one from Italy visited an old Gothic cemetery in Freiburg. While we found it intriguing, another student was puzzled by our enjoyment of the place, showing how cultural differences shaped our experiences.

Advice for Future Exchange Students

I highly recommend the exchange program, especially at the Catholic University of Freiburg. Here are a few key takeaways:

  • Maximize your time: Plan ahead to visit nearby countries, especially the Black Forest, which is stunning year-round.
  • Learn German: Even if you're already proficient, continuing to practice will help in daily interactions and in adjusting to the academic environment.
  • Engage with professors and students: Don’t hesitate to approach professors for help, and use collaborative assignments to connect with local students and understand the German education system.
  • Embrace challenges: Living abroad can be tough, but it leads to personal growth. Stay open to new experiences, and challenges will often become blessings.

Reflections on My Experience

Before arriving in Freiburg, I worried about accommodation, academics, and making friends. However, my time there far exceeded expectations. The quality of education, supportive professors, and the welcoming atmosphere from students and staff made my experience fulfilling.
One of the most important lessons I learned was the value of social connections over material possessions. Sharing experiences, traveling, cooking together, and studying in groups made my time unforgettable.
This exchange also taught me the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone. Studying abroad broadened my horizons and gave me experiences I’ll cherish forever.
The Baden-Württemberg Scholarship offered me a unique opportunity to live and study in Freiburg, and I’m extremely grateful for the support I received. This exchange program has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I look forward to using what I've learned in the future.
